A few months ago now, Angus and I set off on an adventure to a Stud Sheep Sale (Tom would have been there too, but he was windowing away). The Tattykeel sale was one that I have wanted to get to for sometime now, so to be asked by QPL Rural to go with them and to capture some shots, I was honoured.
Now when most people hear Stud Sheep Sale, they think woolly sheep – so let me introduce you to a breed that is somewhat different; the Australian White. These would have to be the most versatile sheep around, that can withstand any conditions (and I say that confidently, as they were bred and the stud is at Oberon NSW, and yes lambs are born in the snow), fantastic mothering skills and can get fat off the smell of grass. For more in depth information on the actual breeding etc check out the Tattykeel website or contact QPL Rural and ask for Craig.
The Gilmore Family (who bred the Australian Whites) are a close knit family who are all so beautiful and so humble and kind, they really are like no other that I have come across in the past. They have literally bred them from the ground up and everyone has such a passion for the breed and all the animals. It’s inspiring and truely remarkable how far they have come and to be able to see where they are headed from here.
The sale ran a little differently this year due to Covid, with an online presence through Auctions Plus, as well as on site bidders. The weather, being cold and rainy, didn’t deter anyone with 250 registered bidders, both in person and online; and golly gosh, the sale was incredible and a true testament to the Gilmore Family and the Tattykeel team for their work and dedication. The results from the sale speak for themselves, with 226 lots on offer and all 226 lots sold with a top of $53,000 for a stud ram sold to Ardene Stud in South Australia with stud rams and stud ewes being purchased to go to the United Arab Emirates, United States and all states of Australia except the Northern Territory. For more information on the sale details check out Tattykeel’s Instagram.
A huge Thank You to QPL & Tattykeel for hosting us, and a huge Congratulations on such an awesome result at the sale! You guys should be so proud, and I know Martin would have a huge smile on his face from up above!
